League Background
GWhyNot, the Kevin McAuliffe City Softball League, was established in 1991 and is a recreational softball league that plays in New York City and Brooklyn. It has a dedicated Commissioner and the League offers flexible scheduling across the 11 Regular Season Games. Rosters may include up to 25 people (age 21+) and the League follows ASA Softball rules unless otherwise specified. Teams are co-ed, it is modified pitch and teams may bat up to 14 players in the lineup. The goal is for teams is to play like competition and identified rivals.
Every team makes the Playoffs unless a team violates the League Rules. Playoffs are single elimination until the Finals which are a best of 3 with a prize for the winning and runner up teams. Games take place weekdays Monday’s – Thursday’s 6 pm or later. Game locations include East River fields, Brooklyn Commodore Barry Park and Prospect Park.
The League has an active website and a supporting mobile application. Fees are charged per team, not per player, and include all umpire and field permits. The 2025 cost per team is $2150 per returning team for the first 18 players and $2200 ($2150 + $50 initiation fee) for new teams for the first 18 players. Any additional player beyond 18 is $20 to cover insurance. Prizes are awarded for the champion and runner up of the Playoffs and a $200 donation is presented to a designated association for autism honoring the winning team per year.
Team Responsibilities
- Selecting a team name
- Identifying a primary / secondary contact to interact with the Commissioner
- Bringing a set of infield bases and home plate for game day
- Purchasing and supplying a game ball per game, F12 Clincher
- Purchasing and using a catcher’s mask
- Using all ASA approved bats
- Submitting the scores through the app
Player Responsibilities
- Complete player registration and insurance waiver
- Bringing a glove and proper footwear
- Wearing the team color / uniform
- Being respectful and conscientious to the umpires and other competitors
